Secrets Moxche Playa del Carmen: A First-Hand Review

First Impressions: This Is Not Your Average All-Inclusive

From the moment you walk into Secrets Moxche, you know this is something different. The lobby is open, airy, and designed with a Mayan-inspired contemporary style that feels both luxurious and grounded. The name "Moxche" means "tree root" in the Mayan language, and that concept is woven throughout the entire property - from the organic wood accents to the way the pathways wind through bamboo-shaded walkways connecting different areas of the resort.

This felt like a super high-end resort from the very first step. The architecture is stunning - earthy minimalism with dark wood, black tile accents, live-edge tables, and teak details everywhere. High ceilings, open spaces, and every detail feels intentional. Multiple reviewers have called it the most beautiful all-inclusive they have ever visited, and I have to agree.

The Pools: Seven of Them, and Every One Is Different

Secrets Moxche has seven heated pools plus a Preferred Club rooftop pool, and they are the highlight of the resort. Each one has its own personality.

The Lagoon Pool is the showstopper - a massive free-form saltwater pool with an actual sandy beach entrance. The bottom is painted to mirror Caribbean blue water, and the shore is lined with real sand. You walk in gradually, just like a beach, except the water is always calm, clean, and perfect temperature. This is what makes Moxche special. I have never seen anything like it at another all-inclusive. You can spend an entire day here and never get bored.

The Main Beach Pool sits closest to the ocean and features the Mantarray swim-up bar. It is the most active pool with daily games, kayak races, and live musicians in the afternoon. The Sugar Reef Pool has its own swim-up bar and tends to be the social hub.

What surprised me most were the three man-made cenote pools - semi-open cave structures with high rock walls providing natural shade. You access them by stairs, and they are tucked between the main tower and Seasoul restaurant. They were almost always empty, which made them feel like a secret retreat. Absolutely serene.

There are also pools with hammocks suspended over the water, which is exactly as relaxing as it sounds. And if you book a swim-out suite, you get your own private pool accessible from your patio.

The Restaurants: 11 Venues and Not a Bad Meal

I was skeptical going in - all-inclusive restaurants can be hit or miss. At Moxche, every single restaurant delivered. This is a resort where dining is a genuine highlight, not an afterthought.

Suki (Pan-Asian/Japanese) was probably my favorite. The sushi bar is excellent, the teppanyaki tables are entertaining, and they offer a limited omakase tasting menu that rivals standalone Japanese restaurants. Reservations required, and worth planning ahead for.

Ember is the open-fire grill and steakhouse. Fine cuts and seafood cooked over real flames. If you are a steak person, do not miss this one.

Dos Almas (Mexican) is the most authentically Mexican restaurant I have experienced at an all-inclusive. They have a taco tasting bar with tequila and mezcal pairings. The food is naturally gluten-free friendly, and the flavors are incredible.

Bamboo (Southeast Asian) is elevated above the lagoon pool with live music during lunch. They also have a plant-based and vegan menu. Bisou (French) is intimate and romantic - smaller plates focused on presentation. Allora (Italian) has surprisingly good gluten-free options including fresh GF bread, pasta, and pizza.

Seasoul is open-air seafood with a romantic seaside setting and Yucatan-inspired recipes. And Market Cafe, the main buffet, is above average for an all-inclusive - the homemade corn tortillas and cooked-to-order stations make it worth visiting even with all the a la carte options.

Room service is available 24 hours and you order through the in-room tablet. I used it for late-night snacks more than once.

The Rooftop: Observatory Bar and Restaurant

If you book Preferred Club (and I strongly recommend you do), the 8th-floor rooftop is worth every extra dollar. The Observatory is an exclusive restaurant and bar with the best views at the resort. Breakfast up here with a sunrise view is unforgettable. The bar opens in the afternoon and serves cocktails as the sun sets behind Playa del Carmen. It is quieter and more refined than the pool bars below - the kind of place where you want to linger.

There is also a rooftop pool up here accessible only by Preferred Club keycard. Plenty of loungers, full drink service, and a fraction of the crowd. This alone justifies the upgrade.

The Hidden Speakeasy

One of the coolest things about Moxche is Gypsy Club - a hidden nightclub accessed through "The Pharmacy." You need to ask for the daily password to get in. Inside, it is a full dance club and speakeasy. It is the kind of detail that shows the resort designers were thinking beyond the standard all-inclusive formula.

The Dark Horse sports bar is another standout - two stories with a golf simulator, foosball, karaoke, and big screens. Open from 5pm to 1am.

The Service

Impeccable. I do not use that word lightly. The staff at Secrets Moxche is genuinely attentive without being overbearing. Pool attendants remember your drink order. Restaurant hosts greet you by name after the second visit. The butlers for Preferred Club are efficient and helpful. This is the level of service you expect at a five-star hotel, and they deliver it consistently across every interaction.

The One Downside: The Beach

If I have to find a flaw, it is the beach. The sand is maintained and raked daily, and the lounge chairs and shade structures are excellent. But the water entry is rocky - typical for Playa del Carmen, where coral reef runs close to shore. It is not dangerous, but it is not the soft sandy entry you get in Cancun or Punta Cana.

Honestly, with seven incredible pools (especially that sandy-bottom lagoon pool), the beach situation barely matters. Most guests spend their time at the pools anyway. But if a perfect beach is your top priority, this is worth knowing.

The Bottom Line

Secrets Moxche Playa del Carmen is one of the finest all-inclusive resorts I have ever experienced. The architecture is breathtaking, the pools are unmatched, the restaurants genuinely deliver, and the service is flawless. It feels like a resort that was designed by people who actually stay at all-inclusive resorts and thought about what would make each moment better.

If you are looking for an adults-only all-inclusive that feels luxurious without being pretentious, Moxche is it. Book Preferred Club if your budget allows - the rooftop access alone is worth the upgrade.

Rating: 98/100. The only thing keeping it from a perfect score is the rocky beach, and even that is easy to forgive when everything else is this good.
